Behavioral Health

Our pets may develop certain behaviors that we find inappropriate or are harmful to our pets. Separation anxiety and noise phobias are common in dogs. Elimination issues are common in cats. Obsessive compulsive disorders may also occur. As our pets get older, cognitive dysfunction may develop.

Some behavioral issues have an underlying medical disease. Kidney and bladder diseases lead to urinary accidents. Loss of hearing and decrease sight may increase phobias. Diseases of the central nervous system present with many different signs.

A comprehensive physical exam is the first step. Laboratory testing may help to determine an underlying cause. Behavioral modification and certain medications are indicated to help treat behavioral problems.
